LORCA CASTLE

The Castle of Lorca (Murcia, Spain) is a fortress of medieval origin built between the 9th and 15th centuries. It comprises a series of defensive structures that, during the Middle Ages, turned the city and its fortress into an impregnable point in the southeast peninsular. The castle of Lorca was a key bastion in the figth between Christians and Muslims during the “Reconquest” conquest. It is classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest and within the delimitation of the historical-artistic complex of Lorca.

With its extension, it is 640 meters long by 120 meters at its widest point, is one of the largest castles in Spain.

Under Islamic rule, the castle of Lorca became an impregnable fortress because of the steepness of the hill on which it sits. Its interior compartmentalized in two halves by the wall of the Espaldón. In the western part there is a large “albacar” to protect food and livestock in times of danger. In the eastern sector is the Alcalá; neighborhood of the Muslim querter. From its walls, the walls that hugged the rest of the iner neighborhoods, souks and suburbs located in the lower part of the city started from the hillsides.

With the conquest of Lorca by Don Alfonso (future Alfonso X) in 1244 for the Crown of Castile, the fortress would become a strategic enclave of the first magnitude as the outpost of the Crown of Castile against Granada. For more than 250 years, the Castle of Lorca would guard the border between the Christian kingdom of Murcia and the Muslim of Granada.

This privileged situation was the reason that forced the Castilian monarchs to make an effort to repopulate the area and build and maintain the most adequate defenses for the Castle.

The Jewish quarter of medieval Lorca was inside the citadel, separated from the rest of the city by its walls. The physical separation of the neighborhoods had as its objective the protection of the Jews, but at the same time it meant a clear ethnic division of the community of Lorca, leaving the Christians in the lower part of the city.

The remains of the Lorca Jewish quarter extend over an area of about 5,700 square meters. So far a total of 12 houses and a 14th century synagogue (only found in the Region of Murcia) have been excavated. The archaeological remains found can be visited in the basement of the “Parador de Turismo” and in the exhibition “Luces de Sefarad”.

The castle is very rich in history and every bit worth a visit and exploring each corner.
