Mother’s Day celebrations began in ancient Greece, along with the festivities in honour of Rhea, the mother of Jupiter, Neptune, and Pluto.

The origin of the current Mother’s Day dates back to the 17th century, in England. At that time, due to poverty, one way of working was to be employed in large houses or palaces, where they also provided shelter and food. On a Sunday of the year, called “Mother’s Sunday,” servants and employees were given the day off to visit their mothers, and allowed to bake a cake (known as a “mothers pie”) to take it as a gift. This celebration was developed collectively, in forests and prairies.

But the main pioneer of the contemporary celebration of “Mother’s Day” was the writer Julia Ward Howe (creator of the” Hymn to the Republic “). She organized a large peaceful demonstration and religious celebration, inviting all mothers who were victims of the war for giving up their children to the forces. But a little later this holiday was forgotten, until 1907 when, Ana Jarvis, a housewife, began a nationwide campaign to establish a day dedicated entirely to mothers.

In Spain we celebrate it on the first Sunday of May, which this year will be Sunday 3rd May.

Given the current circumstances that are affecting the World due to the situation of Coronavirus, we would like to offer a tribute to all mothers, and mainly grandmothers, who have been affected by this Health Crisis.

We wish all MOTHERS and GRANDMOTHERS a HAPPY “MOTHER´S DAY”
