Free guided tour of historical Águilas:  7th April 2018

Águilas is a seaport of southeast Spain and was devolved between two bays; the Puerto Poniente, a good harbour, on the south-west, and the Puerto Levante, which is somewhat dangerous to shipping in rough weather, on the north-east side. Águilas has numerous beaches and many things to see and enjoy. It is and great place to enjoy for the day or more.

Águilas is a very old and history rich town, with natural resources that have been attracting residents since prehistoric man.

Not only did prehistoric man take up residence here but so did the romans as well as the British at one point and all to exploit al the land has to offer.

Each settlement found different reasons to stay and make it home, some of those reasons being minerals, fish, and plants rich in the area.

In Roman times the town was known as Aquila and to Arabs as Áqila.

The town was under the reign of the Coroban Caliphate (a state under the Islamic steward leadership) and then passed to form part of the Kingdom of Valencia before finally and indefinitely becoming part of the Murica Region as it is known today.

The town´s design, which is still present today, was down to Charles III in the 18th century, in particular the Castle of Saint John of Águilas. The Castle was used to defend the town by the several different civilizations that settled there, one of which being the British.

During the second half of the 19th century there was a vast British colony which influenced infrastructure with the Railway system and  aBritish engine built steam train and added to the towns beautiful buildings in the form of houses still existing today.

The tour includes the main monuments covering thousands of years of activity in the area and takes just under 2 hours. The tour starts at 11am from the Tourist office.

Unfortunately the tour is conducted solely in Spanish, but most of the guides speak some English.
