King Felipe of Spain declares Corvera airport open.

The king arrived on board the royal jet shortly after the first passengers flew in from the East Midlands. The second aircraft to land at the Region of Murcia International Airport in Corvera on Tuesday, the first day of commercial flights, was carrying a very special passenger in the form of King Felipe IV of Spain, who arrived to preside over the official inauguration ceremony.

Before the ceremony began the Monarch was given a tour of the terminal building and the external installations including the control tower accompanied by Fernando López Miras, the president of the regional government of Murcia, Diego Conesa, the central government delegate, and José Luis Ábalos, Spain´s Minister for Development.

500 guests awaited the arrival of the king, amongst them; former regional presidents and the former ministers who had worked to open the airport after the original concession ran into financial difficulties and were unable to open until now.

Last Tuesday 15th January, The Region de Murcia International Airport started operating with links to 13 destinations of three European Countries; United Kindon, Ireland and Belgium. Those flights will be operated by Ryanair, EasyJet and TUlfly airlines.
